Sherrilyn Kenyon – Born of Night

The first book in the League series, published in 1996. Rewritten and re-issued in September 2009. Which is the book I have read.

Born of the Night

Born of Night

In the Ichidian Universe, the League rules all. Expertly trained and highly valued, the League Assassins are the backbone of the government. But not even the League is immune to corruption.

He was born and trained to kill.
Command Assasin Nykyrian Quiakides once turned his back on the League – and has been hunted by them ever since. Though many have tried, none can kill him or stop him from completing his current mission: to protect Kiara Zamir, a woman whose father’s political alliance has made her a target.
She must accept his protection – or die.
As her world becomes even deadlier, Kiara must entrust her life to the same kind of beast who once killed her mother and left her for dead. Old enemies and new endanger them both and the only way they can survive is to overcome their suspicions and learn to trust in the very ones who threaten them the most: each other.

Even though this book is a science fiction romance novel, it still is a typical Sherrilyn Kenyon story. A very tormented hero, who despite all the torture he has endured, is still a good person. Yes, he kills, but only for a reason, and he cherishes and protects the few friends he has. Never thinking himself worthy of love, he still falls for the heroine in a big way. And she, incredibly naïve, no matter what has happened to herself, still has a very hard time to come to terms to what life has made of him.
Their journey together is dangerous, but the more she learns about his past, the more she understands him and cares for him. But he tries to save her, even from himself, and gives her everything he thinks she needs. No matter the cost to himself.
Nykyrian could have been a bit tougher to my taste, not so much lamenting his past, and more building his future and take charge. Kiara is a princess, and a famous dancer, protected as much as possible, which is not enough so Nykyrian and his friends steps in. So not only are they after Kiara’s life and the bounty on her head to have her father submit, but also Nykyrians enemies come out of the woodwork to hunt them down.

I liked the story, the world Sherrilyn Kenyon has build, and have gone straight ahead with the next book in this series.

7 stars.
